Pair of Monumental Meiji Period Gilt Metal Censors/Vases
An impressive and unusually large pair of Japanese Meiji period gilt metal ceremonial vessels, dating to the late 19th century, masterfully cast in a bold architectural form inspired by traditional designs. Their commanding scale—measuring 11 inches high, 10 inches in diameter, and weighing an extraordinary 18 pounds each—speaks to the quality of their construction and the importance of their original commission.
The vessels are richly decorated in low and high relief with luxuriant botanical ornament, featuring blooming peonies framed by scrolling foliage and finely engraved groundwork. In Japanese art, the peony (botan) is revered as the "King of Flowers," symbolizing prosperity, nobility, honor, courage, and abundant good fortune. The repeated floral motifs suggest wishes for longevity, happiness, and enduring wealth, making these forms especially appropriate for ceremonial or commemorative use.
The robust body is divided by bold architectural ribs that terminate in projecting bracket-like forms recalling traditional Japanese temple carpentry. The wide trumpet-shaped mouth rises above a compressed globular body and circular pedestal, creating a silhouette that is both monumental and harmonious. Small sculptural floral bosses emerge from the body, adding further depth and refinement to the design.
Each vessel bears a lengthy hand-incised Japanese inscription beneath the rim. Rather than maker's marks, these appear to be presentation inscriptions, indicating the pair was commissioned or dedicated for a special civic, religious, or ceremonial occasion during the Meiji period (1868–1912). Such inscriptions are considerably less common than standard workshop signatures and contribute to the historical interest of the pair. The inscriptions likely record the original donor, recipient, or commemorative event, underscoring their purpose as prestigious presentation objects.
Their substantial weight and meticulous chasing demonstrate the exceptional workmanship of late 19th-century Japanese bronze foundries, a period celebrated for producing sophisticated decorative arts that combined centuries-old metalworking traditions with the artistic refinement that brought Japanese craftsmanship to international acclaim.
Whether displayed as monumental decorative vessels, adapted as dramatic cachepots, or appreciated as important examples of Meiji metalwork, this rare pair possesses the sculptural presence, historical significance, and exceptional craftsmanship sought by collectors of Japanese art and interiors. Their impressive scale, finely engraved decoration, original gilt surface, and unusual presentation inscriptions distinguish them as remarkable examples of Meiji-period bronze artistry.
