Early 19th Century French George Washington Memorial Bone Snuff Box
France for the American Market, circa 1800–1825
An exceptionally rare and historically evocative early 19th-century French memorial snuff or patch box created for the American market and honoring George Washington. Executed in carved bone with a hand-colored portrait miniature beneath convex glass, the box reflects the extraordinary international admiration Washington inspired in the decades immediately following the American Revolution and his death in 1799.
Produced in France during the Napoleonic and Restoration periods, the box embodies the fascination European craftsmen and collectors held for the young American republic and its founding figures. French workshops created numerous commemorative objects depicting Washington, Lafayette, and other revolutionary heroes for export abroad, particularly to the growing American market eager for patriotic keepsakes connected to the nation’s founding era.
The circular lid centers a finely rendered hand-colored portrait of Washington in military dress beneath glass, framed within a dark copper or alloy surround. Above the portrait appears the inscription “GENE. WASHINGTON,” employing the French abbreviation for “Général Washington,” an important indicator of Continental manufacture. The portrait likely derives from engraved likenesses circulated widely throughout Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Numerous related examples of George Washington commemorative portrait boxes survive in major museum and institutional collections, underscoring both their historical importance and desirability among collectors of early Americana and Revolutionary-era material culture.
The body is hand-carved from bone with delicately turned beaded decoration along the perimeter. Rich natural patina, subtle age lines, and warm tonal variations throughout the material reinforce the authenticity and age of the piece. The interior cavity suggests use as a snuff box, patch box, or small personal keepsake container.
Objects of this type occupied an important role within Georgian and Empire-period decorative arts, functioning simultaneously as luxury accessories and political commemoratives. Compact in scale yet rich in symbolism, the present example survives as an intimate relic of early Franco-American cultural exchange and the enduring international legacy of George Washington.
