Pair of Belle Époque Gilt and Patinated Metal Cupid Candlesticks, After Auguste Moreau
A charming pair of Belle Époque gilt and patinated metal candlesticks inspired by the romantic sculptural tradition of Auguste Moreau and the celebrated Moreau family of French artists. Dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, each candlestick is conceived as an elegant amphora-form vessel with a rich dark patina contrasted by gilt-metal mounts, handles, and flower-form candle cups.
Animated winged cupids cling playfully to the bodies of the vessels, their lively poses imparting a sense of movement and whimsy. Rendered in high relief, the putti appear to climb and embrace the forms, transforming these functional objects into sculptural decorative works. The figures are beautifully complemented by the elongated gilt handles and stylized floral drip pans, which recall the organic forms associated with the transition from the Belle Époque to the Art Nouveau period.
Cupid, the classical symbol of love and affection, was a favored decorative motif in French interiors, appearing on clocks, candelabra, mirrors, and furniture. Here, the cherubs lend the pieces a romantic character well suited to a mantel, console, or intimate dining setting.
Elegant in scale and rich in period charm, these candlesticks capture the refined decorative taste of turn-of-the-century France while offering a sculptural presence that remains timeless.
