French, 19th century Empire style ceiling fixture of black tôle using six candelabra lights to illuminate the stunning gold-tone accents. … Read more French, 19th century Empire style ceiling fixture of black tôle using six candelabra lights to illuminate the stunning gold-tone accents. The round, painted metal bowl is suspended from the gilded palmette crown by chains that incorporate oval links imprinted with foliate motifs around an eagle finial that rises from the center. Three caryatids (perhaps deities) hold out the candles from her arms and gryphons project from the belt of the bowl as classic Empire/Napoleonic symbolism. The underside of the bowl is decorated with an artichoke finial surrounded by palmette appliques. The fixture has been professionally rewired to US electrical standards using UL-listed parts and is ready to delight in your interior. It appears certain brass elements have been delicately touched up with gold paint to mask any oxidation. We believe this to be in good antique condition considering its age, and any visible signs of wear are captured in the photos.
