It is signed "Vietri Italia 83" … Read more This beautiful vase, designed by Carlo Scarpa (1932-1947), was reproduced by Venini in 1983. It is signed "Vietri Italia 83" on the bottom. It retains its original labels on the vase. Scarpa was inspired by designs from China resulting in a series of glasswork that was part of his Cinesi (China) series. It has two subtle bands of lighter blue.

Carlo Scarpa was an Italian architect and designer. He was influenced by the materials, landscape, and history of Venetian culture, as well as those of China and Japan. In 2013, the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibited Venetian Glass by Carlo Scarpa: The Venini Company, 1932–1947, featuring the designs and techniques he created for Venini.

His designs for Venini have sold for high prices at auction, including a 1940 vase that sold at Christie's in 2012 for around $309,000, and another vase, found in a thrift store, which sold for $107,100 in 2023.

Venini has been producing beautiful handblown glass in Murano since 1921. Carlo Scarpa's collaboration with Venini produced some of the most innovative 20th-century art glass, defined by key techniques like murrine opache, battuto, and corroso. Serving as artistic director from 1932 to 1947, Scarpa pushed master glassblowers to merge classical silhouettes with radical textures and complex chemical colors. See less
