Artist and Attribution
Sir John Gilbert RA (1817–1897) was an influential British painter, illustrator and draughtsman renowned for historical, literary and Shakespearean subjects.
Gilbert’s paintings and illustrations frequently featured medieval knights, Renaissance costumes, military processions and richly theatrical architectural settings. He contributed extensively to the Illustrated London News and illustrated numerous important literary publications.
He was knighted in 1872 and elected a full Royal Academician in 1876. His energetic compositions and romantic approach to British and European history influenced many artists during the second half of the 19th century.

“Sir John Gilbert R.S.A.”
Sir John Gilbert was a Royal Academician and correctly used the designation RA rather than RSA. The plaque is therefore considered a later collector’s attribution rather than primary documentary evidence of authorship.
It nevertheless forms an interesting part of the painting’s collecting history and records its established association with Gilbert’s name.
