Rich with authentic antique patina, this late 19th-century Victorian writing slope was designed as a portable lap desk for correspondence, journaling, and record keeping.
Measuring a compact 16.75 inches wide, the slant-top desk was intended to rest comfortably on the user’s lap or atop a small table. The hinged writing surface opens to reveal a spacious interior storage compartment with divided sections for stationery, pens, and personal papers. The original lock and brass hinges remain intact, preserving much of the desk’s historic character, though no key is included.
The warm wood finish displays the honest wear expected from well over a century of use, including scattered scratches, ink marks, finish variation, and a beautifully mellow patina that speaks to generations of writing and everyday use. The underside retains old mounting holes that suggest the desk may once have been secured to or displayed on a separate stand or base; no stand accompanies the piece.
An exceptional decorative accent for a library, study, or office, this antique writing slope is equally appealing as a functional conversation piece or as storage for letters, journals, and keepsakes.

The original finish exhibits expected scratches, ink stains, finish wear, and areas of discoloration acquired through decades of use. The interior shows additional evidence of age and use, including ink marks and surface wear. The underside contains old mounting holes, suggesting the desk may once have been paired with or attached to a separate stand or base. A small strip of wood is missing along the underside edge (shown in photographs), though this does not affect the desk’s structural integrity or functionality. Original lock hardware and brass hinges remain intact; key is not included. The hinged writing surface opens and closes properly, and the piece remains structurally sound. less
