A rare pair of Brazilian Modern armchairs designed by Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, crafted in richly figured caviúna wood and newly upholstered in luxurious deep olive mohair.
Produced 1960, these armchairs formed part of the original furnishings commissioned for the iconic Hotel Nacional de Brasília, one of the most ambitious hospitality projects of Brazils modernist era. Designed during the formative years of the nations new capital, the hotel quickly became a gathering place for politicians, diplomats, business leaders, and cultural figures who shaped modern Brazil.
Defined by their sculptural angular frames, sharply articulated arms, and beautifully grained caviúna construction, the chairs exemplify the elegance and craftsmanship that distinguished Brazilian furniture production during the mid-century period. Their refined proportions create a visually light presence while maintaining exceptional comfort and usability.
Of particular significance, one of the chairs retains its original patrimony plaque from Hotel Nacional de Brasília, a rare surviving identifier that directly connects the pair to the hotels historic interiors and enhances their provenance.
Following the hotel's closure and subsequent bankruptcy proceedings, its contents remained largely intact until a consortium of investors acquired the property in 2018. In the years that followed, the buildings original furnishings were dispersed through a series of auctions, releasing many historically significant pieces into private collections for the first time. These armchairs were among those deaccessioned from the hotel.
The caviúna frames have been carefully restored to reveal the species dramatic grain and warm reddish-brown tones, while the upholstery has been renewed in a deep olive mohair chosen to complement the richness of the wood. The result is a sophisticated balance of historical authenticity and contemporary luxury.
An exceptional opportunity to acquire a documented piece of Brazilian design historycombining architectural provenance, collectible significance, and timeless modernist craftsmanship.
