An original 1965 work by American printmaker Dennis Ray Beall (b. 1929), titled "Stop-Flop" and marked "AP" (Artist's Proof) in pencil, lower left. Signed and dated "Beall 65" in pencil, lower right.
This piece belongs to Beall's celebrated 1965 shield series, in which he reworked the imagery of the American shield into a bold, hard-edge Pop Art composition — flat color paired with raised, collagraph-textured relief.
A red cross on a field of blue triangles carries interlocking, overlapping text reading "STOP" and "FLOOP," centered on a hand-drawn grinning mouth, set against a mottled charcoal-and-white ground.
Executed on heavy wove paper with deckled edges. Sheet measures approximately 22"w x 29.75"h. Sold unframed.
Beall's work is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
