A highly unusual set of three monumental, hand-painted plywood musician figures, believed to depict Ike Turner, Tina Turner, and an Ikette of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue.
Measuring approximately 6 to nearly 7 feet tall, this dramatic three-piece ensemble has extraordinary presence. Each figure was individually hand-cut from substantial 1/2-inch plywood and hand-painted with expressive faces, stage clothing, microphones, jewelry, hair, and performance details.
The central female figure, believed to represent Tina Turner, stands approximately 80 inches tall and features an expressive smiling face, textured hair, stage costume, jewelry, microphone, and even tiny painted red fingernail details. The male performer, believed to represent Ike Turner, measures approximately 81 inches tall and 46 inches at his widest point and is depicted in a dark stage suit holding a microphone. The third performer, believed to represent an Ikette, measures approximately 74 inches tall and is captured in a dynamic dance pose wearing a turquoise stage costume.
The figures appear to have been made as large-scale display or decorative pieces, possibly for a commercial, theatrical, music, nightclub, promotional, or entertainment setting. Their exact origin and original use are unknown. No artist's signature, maker's mark, venue identification, or other documentation has been found, and the identification of the performers as Ike Turner, Tina Turner, and an Ikette is an attribution based upon their appearance and presentation rather than documented provenance.
Numerous old mounting holes are present, consistent with previous installation or display. The bottoms also retain deliberately cut slots that appear to have accommodated an original support or display system; any original bases or supports are no longer present.
The figures retain extensive original painted surfaces with wonderful age and character. Condition varies, with scattered paint loss, abrasions, scratches, edge wear, old mounting holes, and areas of plywood loss and damage. The male figure shows particularly substantial weathering and paint loss to the face and other areas. There is damage/loss to portions of the microphone and feet, as shown.
The central female / “Tina” figure has a noticeable bow to one leg. The female dancer / “Ikette” figure has loss to one foot, with a substantial portion missing, as shown in the photographs. These condition issues appear longstanding and have not been repaired.
The figures have been lightly wiped of surface dirt but have not been restored or repainted. Their weathered, untouched surfaces are an important part of their character, and no attempt has been made to cosmetically disguise their age.
Approximate dimensions:
Male / “Ike”: 81" H × 46" W at widest point
Central female / “Tina”: 80" H × 34" W at widest point
Female dancer / “Ikette”: 74" H × 38" W at widest point
Material: 1/2" plywood
