Powerful, expressive, and undeniably theatrical, this monumental glazed ceramic lion commands attention from every angle.
Standing an impressive 23.25 inches high, the sculpture depicts a roaring lion with exceptional movement and sculptural presence. Rich golden ochre glazes transition into a dramatically modeled mane accented with warm espresso tones, creating remarkable depth and texture. The open mouth reveals finely painted teeth and a soft blush interior, while amber-colored eyes and glossy black detailing lend the piece a vivid sense of life.
Unlike many decorative ceramic animals, this example possesses a distinctly sculptural quality. Every view offers a different composition—from the sweeping mane to the expressive facial features—making it equally compelling whether displayed on a pedestal, beside a fireplace, or anchoring a grand entry.
Executed using traditional slip-cast ceramic construction and finished entirely by hand, the sculpture reflects the bold decorative aesthetic associated with Italian ceramic workshops of the mid-20th century.
Today, oversized animal sculptures have become highly sought after by collectors and interior designers for their ability to introduce personality, warmth, and architectural scale into both traditional and contemporary interiors.
A remarkable statement piece equally suited to Palm Beach, Hollywood Regency, English Country, Mediterranean, Contemporary, and Eclectic interiors.
This lion would look spectacular:
Beside a limestone fireplace
Flanking an entry console
In a library beside leather club chairs
Beside oversized fiddle leaf figs or olive trees
Paired with brass and burl wood furniture
In a Palm Beach-inspired sunroom
In a luxury boutique or hotel lobby
Beneath oversized contemporary artwork
As a dramatic foyer statement
