Every frame here started as a hickory sapling. Old Hickory cuts them at roughly two inches in diameter from woodlands in southern Tennessee and northern Mississippi, leaves the bark on, and joins them with mortise and tenon the same way the company did in the 1890s. No two poles are identical, so no two chairs are either. Look at the arms and you can read the grain and the natural taper of the wood.

These are built for sitting, not looking. Deep seat, low arms carried on triple spindle supports, a webbed platform deck under generous loose cushions. The proportions come from lodge furniture, which means they work in a great room with high ceilings and a fireplace, and they hold up to actual family use.

The chairs retain their original Old Hickory labels from the Shelbyville, Indiana factory, where the company has built furniture since 1982. Cushions are in the original rust and terracotta chenille, a discontinued pattern, warm and ready to use as-is or an easy recover in your own fabric. See less
