Introduction
A beautiful original late Victorian oil painting on canvas by the accomplished British genre painter William Oliver, also known as William Oliver Williams (1823–1901).
Dating to approximately 1875–1885, the painting portrays an elegant young woman seated within a secluded garden beneath a magnificent crimson-red parasol.
The sitter is gracefully dressed in an ivory-white gown with gold-coloured detailing and a flowing blush-pink satin sash. Holding a delicate pink rose, she looks towards the viewer with a calm and contemplative expression.
Her fashionable flower-trimmed hat, refined pose and richly coloured parasol capture the elegance, romance and sophistication associated with late Victorian society.
The painting has become known within the art market as The Red Parasol. Current research indicates that this is a descriptive auction title rather than the painting’s original Victorian exhibition title. The sitter remains unidentified and is understood to represent one of Oliver’s idealised female subjects, for which the artist became particularly admired.
Combining Victorian portraiture, figurative painting and decorative garden imagery, this highly attractive work would make a sophisticated addition to a traditional, English country house, maximalist or romantic interior.

Description
The vivid scarlet parasol forms the dramatic focal point of the composition, contrasting beautifully with the cool green tones of the surrounding garden.
William Oliver’s accomplished draughtsmanship is particularly evident in the delicate modelling of the sitter’s face, luminous flesh tones and finely observed hands. Sensitive and confident brushwork creates convincing textures throughout the satin, lace and silk elements of her fashionable Victorian costume.
The comparatively restrained garden background keeps the viewer’s attention focused upon the figure, creating an atmosphere of intimacy, elegance and quiet contemplation.
The carefully balanced colour palette combines vivid crimson red with soft ivory, antique gold, blush pink and rich natural greens. The result is an elegant and highly decorative Victorian composition with timeless visual appeal.
The painting’s vertical format, romantic subject and strong use of colour make it especially suitable as a statement artwork for a drawing room, reception room, bedroom, library, hallway or formal dining space.

Professional Conservation
The painting previously underwent a historic professional full relining, consistent with established conservation practices for important 19th-century canvases.
During 2026, it underwent comprehensive professional conservation by Vanessa Andrew M.A., Fine Art Conservator, whose studio is based at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum.
The conservation treatment included:
Consolidation of unstable areas of paint.
Careful surface cleaning.
Removal of aged and discoloured varnish.
Removal of non-original overpainting from an earlier restoration.
Conservation repair of a historic canvas tear.
Strip-lining of the canvas edges.
Professional filling and sympathetic retouching.
Application of conservation-grade protective varnishes.
One of the most significant discoveries made during conservation was that an earlier restoration had unnecessarily covered the artist’s original highlights on the sitter’s white dress.
These later additions were carefully removed, revealing William Oliver’s original brushwork and restoring the intended effects of light, texture and modelling.
The painting is accompanied by a comprehensive professional conservation treatment report and supporting invoice.
Frame
Recently professionally reframed in an exceptional-quality Larson-Juhl gilt moulded frame, selected specifically to complement the painting’s Victorian character and warm colour palette.
The moulded gilt finish gives the artwork a suitably elegant presentation while allowing the vivid red parasol and delicate costume details to remain the principal focus.
The reverse has been fitted with a modern protective backing board to help protect the canvas from dust, accidental contact and environmental fluctuations.
The historic labels and original provenance information have been carefully preserved beneath the backing board.
Ready to hang and enjoy immediately.
Provenance
The painting retains the original label of Lindblad & Son Konsthandel, Hälsingborg—now Helsingborg—Sweden, together with an original typed Swedish biographical label attached to the reverse.
The Swedish biography reflects a historic confusion between two artists who shared the name William Oliver. Modern research, supported by museum collections, published auction records, the painting’s signature and stylistic analysis, identifies the artist as William Oliver, born William Oliver Williams (1823–1901), rather than the earlier landscape painter of the same name.
Recorded provenance:
Lindblad & Son Konsthandel, Hälsingborg, Sweden.
British private collection.
Biddle & Webb Auctioneers, Birmingham, 2014, catalogued under the descriptive title The Red Parasol.
Rogers Jones Auctioneers, Cardiff, 2026, catalogued as William Oliver (1823–1901).

Privately loaned and exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum during 2026.
Professionally conserved during 2026 by Vanessa Andrew M.A., Fine Art Conservator.
Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD®.
Before the painting was professionally reframed, detailed photographs were taken recording the original 19th-century stretcher, historic relined canvas, Swedish dealer’s label and typed biographical label.
These historic elements remain carefully preserved beneath the modern protective backing board.
