A rare and charming Japanese three-piece carved ivory set dating to the late Meiji period, circa 1880–1910. Finely turned and delicately incised, each miniature vessel is decorated with a pair of playful monkeys, rendered in a lively and expressive manner characteristic of small-scale export works from this era. Each monkey is finely engraved with delicate fur detailing and expressive features, giving the small scenes a lively and animated character.
The set comprises three lidded containers. Two retain their original matching ivory spoons, while the third features a pierced lid, likely intended for powder or finely ground contents. The survival of the original spoons is particularly uncommon and greatly enhances the completeness and collectability of the ensemble.
Each lid bears a red seal mark, indicating workshop or maker’s marks and confirming the pieces as an original, matched set. The ivory has developed a warm, natural patina over time, lending the surfaces a soft, mellow tone consistent with late 19th-century examples.
Such small carved ivory vessels were produced in Japan during the late Meiji period as refined personal objects—used for cosmetics, medicines, or condiments—and were highly prized as export pieces for the Western market. Complete sets with their original components are increasingly difficult to locate.
This delightful group combines fine workmanship, charming subject matter, and rare completeness, making it an appealing addition to a collection of Japanese decorative arts or small-scale ivory carvings.
