On offer is a pair of beautiful antique plates which are classic pieces of 19th-century English Patent Ironstone China, most … Read more On offer is a pair of beautiful antique plates which are classic pieces of 19th-century English Patent Ironstone China, most likely manufactured by Mason's (or a contemporary Staffordshire pottery like Hicks, Meigh & Johnson or Davenport) circa 1815–1830.
The decoration is heavily inspired by Chinese Export porcelain and Japanese "Imari" trade wares. English potteries adapted these styles to satisfy the Regency-era obsession with exotic Eastern aesthetics.
The center features two hand-colored exotic birds, often referred to as birds of paradise or pheasants. The pair are perched on a stylized cobalt blue Scholar's rock next to a blooming pink peony tree. The scalloped, notched edge displays a complex geometric and scrollwork border rendered in burnt orange (iron red), rich underglaze cobalt blue with delicate gold gilt highlights.
The plates were decorated using a transfer-printed and hand-enameled technique. The outline of the design was first printed onto the ceramic body from an engraved copper plate. Artisans then meticulously hand-painted the vibrant pink, green, yellow, and orange enamel washes over the top before applying the final glaze and gold detailing.
The reverse side is entirely plain and white, featuring a faint incised tool mark or firing mark near the center, which is very common for early 19th-century stoneware. True English ironstone from this period is distinctively heavy, dense, and produces a clear ring when gently tapped.
The plates are in remarkable antique condition. The enamel colors remain exceptionally bright and vivid. There are minor signs of age, such as slight wear to the gold gilt edge and a few typical glaze imperfections from the original 19th-century kiln firing.
