39.5" × 39.5"; wide flat frame with applied lozenge/diamond blocks; heavy, thick timber
Genuine water gilding — gesso ground and gold leaf — survives beneath a later dark overpaint. It's clearest at the corners, where the gold breaks through and cream gesso shows at the chips.
Old, traditionally built back boards, painted black at some later point
The mirror glass, cardboard backing, and rope hanger are all modern replacements; the frame itself is considerably older.

From a Michigan estate; no documentation
The gilding is the story here. I have deliberately not cleaned, stripped, or touched up anything. A professional conservator's test-clean is the right next step for whoever wants to take it further — and that upside goes to the buyer, not me.
