Produced in the Liège region of Belgium, this bookcase reflects the enduring influence of the French Régence style ~ itself an evolution of the Louis XIV style ~ interpreted through the craftsmanship of Belgian cabinetmakers. Liégeois furniture became highly regarded throughout Europe for its solid oak construction, refined hand carving, and restrained ornamentation that emphasized proportion and quality over excessive decoration. This example has been professionally stripped, revealing the beautiful natural color and richly figured grain of the solid oak. Inside, remnants of the original painted finish have been preserved, creating a beautifully weathered surface that speaks to the cabinet’s long history.
