Vintage NAPCO Winking Santa Claus Ceramic Christmas Salt and Pepper Shakers. These shakers feature only Santa's face, creating a playful and contemporary design that was quite avant-garde for the late 1950s. The NAPCO Winking Santa line represents some of the most sought-after and charming mid-century Christmas ceramics. Released primarily in the late 1950s, this specific design moves away from the traditional, stoic images of Santa from the early 20th century, embracing a playful and mischievous "Atomic Era" aesthetic.
The wink itself is a deliberate nod to Clement Clarke Moore’s famous 1823 poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas" ("A wink of his eye and a twist of his head..."). The wry smile and asymmetrical eye create a knowing, conspiratorial expression. The winking eye and smile are beautifully designed and add to the overall cuteness of the piece.
These shakers are in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, repairs, or paint loss. There is only a small amount of age-appropriate wear on the bottom, as shown in the photos. One shaker has the NAPCO seal, and both have their stoppers; one may not be original but matches well. They also retain the original silver foil sticker.
NAPCO (National Potteries Company) produced these highly collectible Santa Claus salt and pepper shakers in Japan during the 1950s.
