This plate (Plate 57) features Spindle Shells (Fusus species): Notable for their elongated, elegant spindle shapes, long siphonal canals, and high spires. The prominent large shells at the center and bottom sides represent robust varieties like Fusus antiquus (the common whelk or neptune shell).Tower. Top Shells: The smaller numbered figures surrounding the center display varied high-spired marine snails, turret shells, and small cone-shaped top shells used for comparative scientific study in 19th-century malacology.

Captain Thomas Brown (1785–1862) was a respected Scottish naturalist and conchologist who belonged to several leading scientific societies, including the Royal Physical Society and the Wernerian Natural History Society.
