Native to southeast asia, the pomelo is the ancestral species from which the modern grapefruit was later developed through natural hybridization. The plate illustrates the impressive fruit alongside its fragrant white blossoms, glossy evergreen foliage, and a detailed cross-section revealing the characteristic pale pink flesh. The artwork was painted from life by the renowned dutch botanical artist berthe hoola van nooten (1817–1892) while living on the island of java. Her celebrated publication, fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'ile de java, ranks among the finest nineteenth-century botanical works devoted to the extraordinary flora of the dutch east indies. Printed in vibrant chromolithography by p. De pannemaeker of ghent, this plate was issued in the third edition published in brussels by librairie européenne c. Muquardt around 1880. The pomelo has been cultivated in asia for centuries and remains highly valued for its sweet, aromatic fruit. As the largest member of the citrus family and the botanical ancestor of the grapefruit, it occupies an important place in both horticultural history and botanical science. This is an original antique print, printed circa 1880, and not a modern reproduction or later copy.
