A Chinese Hetian Jade Bi is an ancient circular jade disc with a central hole. It historically symbolized the heavens and was used in rituals and as an insignia of rank and status. Hetian jade, highly prized for its beauty and durability, has long been revered in Chinese culture for its association with moral integrity and purity. The Bi form dates back to the Neolithic period, notably in the Liangzhu culture, and continued to be produced through the Shang, Zhou, and Han dynasties.

This particular Hetian Jade Bi is set within an elaborate silver gilt filigree frame adorned with enamel ornamentation. It is further embellished with four small natural pearls and four small rubies.

The frame has a diameter of 85 mm (3.3"), while the jade Bi itself measures 52 mm (2") in diameter. The total weight of the pendant is 103 grams.

We believe the Hetian Jade Bi disc itself to be of significant age. However, it was mounted in its current silver and enamel frame during the "Vintage Export China" era, likely in the late 19th century. "Vintage Export China" refers to goods produced in China specifically for export to Western markets before the 20th century, primarily during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). This period saw a flourishing export trade in luxury items such as porcelain, lacquerware, silk, and finely crafted silverwork, which became highly coveted in the West.

Unfortunately, the frame is not in perfect condition. It shows signs of wear, and the gilding has been partially abraded. Nonetheless, despite these minor imperfections, the pendant remains visually striking and impressive, with its vibrant enamel work and contrasting precious stones.
