Vintage Satsuma-Style Porcelain Fishbowl Planter. Satsuma ware originally developed in Japan during the 16th century, famous for its creamy glaze, intricate hand-painted figures, and heavy gold leaf detailing called moriage.
While it emulates classic Japanese art, this specific style of heavy, thick-walled porcelain fishbowl with multi-colored border panels was mass-produced in China during the late 20th century for the Western export market. Historically, these massive bowls were filled with water and kept indoors to house small ornamental goldfish and koi. Today, they are primarily used by designers as decorative cachepots or high-end indoor planters.
