An impressive early pewter plate or charger
Single cast reed, normal width rim
Nicely marked at the bottom with two identical crowned hallmarks and inscription T. L. P, the owner's initials possibly
The stamps bear the letters I & D (the pewterer's initials most likely) to both sides of a large T, under FIN and a crown
Within European guilds, the crown served as a guarantee of quality, indicating that the alloy contained a high percentage of pure tin and was safe for serving food (without excessive lead content).
The Double Strike (stamping the exact same punch twice side-by-side) was a classic 18th-century practice in Germany, the Netherlands, and France to verify the goods before they left the workshop.
