This large-scale work combines an angled … Read more Design Plus Gallery presents a 1970’s Kinetic Light + Optical Sculpture by Stephen Roth. This large-scale work combines an angled geometric metal cube, a circular viewing aperture, a spherical reflector, a motor-driven mobile of translucent plastic elements, and an internal light source. Movement and illumination create shifting jewel-like patterns within the chamber, while the convex optical surface produces a fish-eye distortion of the surrounding environment. Roth referred to the reflector as a “giant contact lens,” reflecting his interest in perception, spatial distortion, and how viewers see themselves. The metal enclosure rests upon a tapered wood pedestal assembled in diagonal bands, establishing a distinct visual contrast between the angular upper form and the natural grain of the base. The sculpture was acquired in Boulder, Colorado, during the 1970s, when Roth was represented by the Wilamaro Gallery of Contemporary Art in Denver. It is a rare example of period kinetic and light-based sculpture incorporating movement, illumination, optics, and reflection. It is in good condition; minimal wear from usage. Made in the USA.
