A finely worked black lacquered papier mâché letter holder from Japan's Meiji period, its shaped, arched back and scalloped divided … Read more A finely worked black lacquered papier mâché letter holder from Japan's Meiji period, its shaped, arched back and scalloped divided body entirely hand-decorated in raised gilt with figural genre scenes — courtly women and attendants at leisure among pavilions, screens, parasols, and garden settings, bordered by dense gilt scrollwork and geometric fret patterns. The gilding is crisp and layered, built up in fine linework against the deep black ground, with an oval reserve scene to the front panel. Raised on turned bun feet, with a wire hanging loop at the crest for wall mounting. Purchased at a recent Skinner auction in Boston.



CONDITION

Overall good condition with wear consistent with age and use. One corner of the base edge with a small chip, as shown in photos, with minor associated gilt loss at that corner. Fine craquelure to the lacquer throughout, typical of the period and medium.
