An original 1875 hand-colored lithograph by celebrated ornithological artist J. G. Keulemans, depicting the Algerian Bush-Babbler and Palestine Bush-Babbler perched among softly rendered foliage. Fine feather detail, restrained coloring, and warm neutral tones give the composition a quiet elegance that feels equally suited to a traditional library or a more layered contemporary interior.
The work is Plate 98 from Henry Eeles Dresser’s monumental A History of the Birds of Europe, Including All the Species Inhabiting the Western Palaearctic Region. Issued in parts between 1871 and 1881, the publication became one of the defining ornithological works of the Victorian period, with Keulemans serving as one of its principal illustrators.
The lithograph has been newly presented in a walnut frame with layered muted-green and charcoal matting chosen to complement the soft earth tones of the original hand coloring. It has been archivally mounted with acid-free materials using reversible, preservation-conscious methods.
This is an original nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph, not a modern reproduction. It is sold framed and ready to hang, and the work shown is the actual piece offered.
