Offered is an Italian Ceramic Sgraffito vase in the style of Aldo Londi for Bitossi. Sgraffito literally means scratched in Italian, and these ceramics are textured based on this process. The pottery is dried to a leather finish where it is strong enough to keep its shape, yet still soft enough to carve. A first base of matte glaze is applied to the pottery, followed by a high contrast 2nd color, and the design is then etched/scratched into the surface to reveal the bottom layer. These leaves are very typical designs in Aldo Londi's body of work. The word "Italy" was stamped on the bottom but is hard to capture in photos. This piece is a bright verdigris turquoise under layer beneath a charcoal/black top layer.

There are a few parts where the charcoal layer of glaze is thinner than others and parts of the verdigris show through. This is intrinsic to the nature of sgraffito pottery and adds to its beauty. There is some white paint on the base rim, possibly from being on a freshly painted surface too early. Any wear is commensurate with use. less
