Unusual late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) Chinese scholar’s metal box with sliding cover and 3 compartments, decorated in champleve enamel technique. The box is meant to hold small scholar’s items such as short brushes, ink cakes and such. The material of the box is paktong - an alloy made of copper, nickel and zinc extensively used in China in 18th and 19th centuries. The cover with depiction of butterflies among different flowers, all on the background of blue enamel imitating the color of lapis lazuli. The sides are decorated with bats and more flowers and butterflies. Very nice and unusual object, beautiful patina, marked with maker’s stamp on the bottom.
