The Thonet Chair No. 90 is one of the rarest models of classic Viennese bentwood furniture. The model was introduced to the Thonet collection in 1899 and discontinued around 1910. Due to this comparatively short production run, the No. 90 is significantly rarer today than the famous coffeehouse chairs No. 14 or No. 18 and is considered a highly sought-after specialty among collectors.
Its most striking feature is the exceptional backrest with three elegantly curved bentwood slats. Unlike the usual round bentwood rods, these flat slats were bent across their width – a technically sophisticated construction that was patented at the time and gives the chair its distinctive silhouette.
The present example impresses with its harmonious proportions and excellent condition. The original dark-stained beechwood surface, the Viennese cane webbing, and the brass screws underscore the high level of craftsmanship of the Thonet brothers and the authentic character of this historic piece of furniture.
The chair is documented in the original Thonet catalogs from the turn of the century and represents a beautiful example of the transition from Historicism to early Art Nouveau. Its elegant lines combine technical innovation with timeless aesthetics, making it both an exceptional collector's item and a stylish statement piece in modern living spaces.
