Luther Company, one of Europe’s most important pioneers in bentwood and plywood craftsmanship. Founded in Reval (present-day Tallinn, Estonia, then part of the Russian Empire), Luther became internationally celebrated for its outstanding quality and innovative woodworking techniques. The company was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, a distinction proudly commemorated by the original double factory stamp preserved inside this hat box. This example is particularly desirable due to its extraordinary size. with a diameter of 51.5 cm (20.28 in.) and a height of 28.5 cm (11.22 in.), it belongs among the largest Luther hat boxes produced, originally intended for storing the impressive and elaborately decorated ladies’ hats of the Belle Époque. Constructed using Luther’s renowned bentwood technique, the box is most likely made from birch, the preferred timber for premium bentwood production because of its flexibility, strength, and beautiful natural grain. The elegant simplicity of its construction reflects the exceptional craftsmanship for which Luther became internationally renowned. The hat box remains in very good antique condition for its age. It displays an attractive, authentic patina together with honest signs of use accumulated over more than a century, giving the piece remarkable character and authenticity. The original leather carrying strap is largely preserved, as is the original buckle. Minor historic inactive wormholes are present, entirely consistent with age, with no signs of active infestation. To preserve its originality, the box has been carefully cleaned and treated with a premium conservation-grade furniture conditioner specifically formulated for antique wood. The treatment was carried out with great care to preserve the original surface, colour, and historic patina without altering the authenticity of the piece. Beyond its original purpose, this impressive hat box is a wonderfully versatile decorative object. It makes an elegant side table, an exceptional storage box for blankets, textiles, or collectibles, or simply a striking sculptural accent in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Its generous proportions and warm natural wood tones allow it to integrate beautifully into a wide variety of interior styles. More than simply a storage box, this is a genuine piece of European design history—an authentic survivor from the Belle Époque that combines historical significance, exceptional craftsmanship, practical functionality, and timeless decorative appeal.
