A wonderfully theatrical Continental European music stand, handcrafted from richly figured oak during the late 19th century.
The adjustable reading platform is shaped in the form of a classical lyre, an especially appropriate flourish for displaying sheet music. It is supported by an elaborately carved and fluted column decorated with acanthus leaves, beaded molding and turned architectural details.
The most memorable feature is the sculptural tripod base. Three boldly carved mythical griffin or dolphin heads emerge beneath the column, continuing into sweeping legs ending in paw feet. Seen from every direction, the carving gives this functional object the presence of a small piece of sculpture.
The lyre-form platform tilts to the desired reading angle, while the stand adjusts in height. Beautiful beside a piano, it could also serve as a lectern, menu stand, guest-book stand or distinctive display pedestal for an open art book.
