It decorated with an Arhat (known in Japan as a Rakan), Kannon (the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy and Compassion), identifiable by her distinct halo, robes, and the sacred vessel she holds. She is accompanied by an attendant child or disciple amidst a landscape of stylized floral motifs and tree branches and also the immortals. They are traditionally illustrated in Satsuma pottery with expressive, intense facial features and bold golden halos. Unlike porcelain, authentic Satsuma is a dense earthenware.
