The … Read more This Dutch Delft tobacco jar is of ovoid form, painted in blue and white on a tin-glazed earthenware body. The front bears a large shaped cartouche inscribed "BRASILLE" in capital letters, denoting Brazilian tobacco, surrounded by an elaborate border of scrolling acanthus, floral sprays, and baroque ornament; the reverse is left in plain white tin-glaze. The shoulder is painted with a garland of flowering branches. The stepped brass lid, pyramidal in form with concentric molded tiers and a small urn finial, sits over the rolled neck. The interior of the lid shows green verdigris patina, and a crack is present on the exterior face. The base is unglazed and bears a painted maker's mark. Chips and glaze loss are visible at the rim, consistent with age. See less
