Exceptional … Read more Jean Picart Le Doux “Concerto de Ravel” Aubusson Tapestry, Raymond Picaud Workshop, 1/6, Handwoven in wool on cotton foundation. Exceptional mid-century modern Aubusson tapestry entitled “Concerto de Ravel”, designed by the celebrated French artist Jean Picart Le Doux (1902–1982) and handwoven at the prestigious Raymond Picaud workshop in Aubusson, France. This striking composition pays tribute to the music of French composer Maurice Ravel. A monumental violin dominates the scene, surrounded by a grand piano, musical staves, stars and radiant solar motifs. The powerful palette of deep black, vivid red, sky blue, grey and brilliant yellow creates a dramatic and highly decorative composition characteristic of Jean Picart Le Doux’s distinctive artistic language. The tapestry retains the original atelier label on the reverse, identifying the work as Concerto de Ravel, with the inscription: “Carton de Jean Picart Le Doux — Tissé à l’atelier de Raymond Picaud, Maître Lissier, Aubusson.” The label also indicates the dimensions of 1.50 × 1.50 metres and appears to bear the edition number 1/6. The tapestry is additionally signed “Jean Picart Le Doux” within the weave and bears the woven monogram of the Raymond Picaud workshop. A superb example of the revival of French tapestry art in the 20th century, this work combines music, celestial imagery and bold modernist abstraction. with its impressive square format and vibrant colours, it would make a spectacular focal point in a sophisticated contemporary or mid-century interior.
