Romain de Tirtoff, known professionally as Erté (1892–1990), was a Russian-born French artist and designer internationally recognized as one of the leading figures of the Art Deco movement. After moving to Paris in the early 20th century, he gained prominence through influential fashion illustrations for Harper’s Bazaar, where his work appeared for more than two decades. Erté also designed costumes and sets for theater, opera, and film, working with major entertainment productions in Europe and the United States. His later career brought renewed acclaim through limited-edition prints, bronzes, and decorative works that were widely collected worldwide. Celebrated for his elegant line, stylized figures, and lasting impact on 20th-century design, Erté remains one of the most iconic artists associated with Art Deco. See less
