This chair was purchased new from Brunovan Inc. in the mid-1960s as a display piece in our high-end interior design furniture showroom. Brunovan Inc. was known as manufacturers and importers of the highest-end reproduction French and European furniture and was in business in New York City until the early 1980s. This chair was used a display sample from which orders could be taken (as the chair was available in a variety of finishes and upholstery options). It was never sold and remained in our showroom on display from that time. French Empire furniture is known for its references to classical antiquity, with especial focus on Greek, Roman and Egyptian motifs. This chair is no exception featuring as it does gilded star emblems and rosettes, and of particular note are the out swept back legs, which are rendered in gilded scales, evocative of some mythological creature. Also of interest is the top rail of the back rest, which is adorned with gilded braid in a large diamond pattern. The attached boxed chair seat is upholstered in a deep wine colored medallion silk by Scalamandre and is original to the chair. The upholstery terminates in a scalloped shape abbreviated skirt at the front of the chair. As noted on the label the attached boxed cushion is filled with cattle and horse hair and wrapped in cotton felt, hallmarks of fine custom upholstery. This chair is perfect for the collector, or anyone who wants a spectacular accent chair to enliven the design and deepen the visual interest of a space. As such, various superficial nicks, scratches and blemishes are evident on the black lacquer finish. These are consistent with its age and its use as a display piece in a design furniture showroom. No restorations have been done by us to this chair. The silk upholstery is original and in good condition. less
