The original footed bowl is glazed in the classic blue-and-white manner with scrolls, loops and meandering lines, imitating the Perso-Arabic calligraphy found on ceramics brought to China by Silk Road traders. Tucked within the swirling brushstrokes is the Chinese symbol of double happiness (shuangxi), a traditional motif for a loving partnership or happy marriage. See less
