The original footed bowl is glazed in the classic blue-and-white manner with scrolls, loops and meandering lines, imitating the Perso-Arabic calligraphy found on ceramics brought to China by Silk Road traders. Tucked within the swirling brushstrokes is the Chinese symbol of double happiness (shu?ngx? ?), a traditional motif for a loving partnership or happy marriage. The curved interior is left undecorated, marked only by a pinprick etching that names its previous owner. See less
