Offered is a hand-painted and burnished glaze vintage Mid 20th Century (late 1950s, early 1960s) Quail bird figurine made in Tonalá, Jalisco Mexico, a province renowned for its earth-tone clay and for all the pottery and ceramic art created since the 1950s.
Signed "TGM Mexico" on the bottom, it was created with a deep beige putty undercoat and its back is embellished with a bird and the native flower of the region painted in cinnamon, terracotta, with gray leaves, and flourishes on its feathers in white, black, and gray. "TGM" is an acronym for Talleres de G. Martínez, a prominent mid-20th-century pottery and export workshop/studio that operated in Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico. The workshop employed various skilled local artisans to hand-paint their iconic bird, floral, and traditional desert motifs onto petatillo or burnished clay (barro bruñido).
