This is a gorgeous desk made by cabinet maker Donald Ross in England in the 19th century, in the style of French furniture from the 18th century. Donald Ross was known for making reproduction furniture to such a high degree that Thomas Ross, the maker's son, wrote to the Victoria and Albert museum in 1928 stating that several 'French, 18th-century' pieces in its collection had in fact been made by his father.
This table is made out of mahogany overlaid in marquetry which is made up of strips of purplewood, boxwood and ebony, and the small circles are of ebony, while the ground is of satinwood. The table is outlined in a lovely gilt brass, and has one functioning drawer that pulls out. The piece has been lovingly restored, the gilding is bright, and the french polish is strong. It was retailed by Edwards & Roberts of London.
