Stately and dignified, the Staffordshire style black and white spotted dog is perched on an oval pillow-like base decorated with hand painted moss work and floral accents. There is a hare laying next to him as if a prize just brought to you from the hunt. The piece is 11" long and 9"tall, so whether you place it on a mantle or on top of a stack of books, it has a presence. The piece itself is hand-painted porcelain with a glossy crackle-glaze finish. There is the tiniest chip on the nose, but otherwise in amazing vintage condition.
This style dog is known as a "Disraeli Curl" whippet greyhound, modeled after popular Victorian era designs from around the 1850s. These were popular as mantel decorations in the Victorian era and were characterized by a "Disraeli curl" on the head- representative of the curls of the former British Prime Minister. I believe this is a discontinued reproduction from around the 1990s. See less
