This pair of armchairs represents an extraordinary testament to high-period Milanese design, attributed to the renowned architect and designer Guglielmo Ulrich. Created around 1940, these seats perfectly embody the transition between the geometric forms of Art Deco and the softer, more fluid, and sculptural lines that would characterize the post-World War II era.
The structure is imposing yet slender, dominated by generous armrests that open outward in an inviting embrace. The most distinctive and original feature is the relief motif on the front sides: a sinuous line, resembling a wing or a stylized flame, emanating from the base and extending along the armrest, emphasizing its three-dimensionality with extreme elegance.
The backrest, with its characteristic dome shape, is embellished with diamond-shaped quilting (capitonné) with covered buttons, lending geometric rigor to the softness of the overall design and accentuating its monumental appearance.
The upholstery is in fine purple velvet, a dense fabric that plays with light, enhancing the volumes and curves of the silhouette. Completing the piece, a majestic fringe of light gold bullion trim runs along the entire sinuous base. This detail is not only decorative; it also conceals the legs, giving the illusion that the armchairs are floating solemnly above the floor.
Ultimately, these armchairs are not simple furnishing elements, but true interior sculptures, combining high-quality Italian craftsmanship with a sense of cultured, bold, and timeless luxury.
