This Really is a Great Looking Authentic Antique American Primitive Stoneware Jug. Circa Approx 1880s. It is Rendered in a 2 Gallon Liquid Storage Capacity Size as Denoted by the Embossed "2". These Types of Jugs were Commonly Used to Store Spirits - Liquors - Cider - Vinegar - Molasses - Spring Water Etc. It has a Classic Sand Color American Salt Glaze Exterior. The front is Hand Decorated a Deep Cobalt Blue "Stencil" Style and Advertises the Merchants Name DONNELLY BROS. in TROY NEW YORK.
I Found Some Interesting Added Documented Information About This Company as Follows - The Donnelly Brothers were Prominent Wine Merchants in Troy New York. They Established their business in 1869 and it was Run by James W. Donnelly. Apparently This Company Specialized in Altar and Sacramental Wines.
Back in the day these type of jugs were on loan to customers from Retail Merchants so That They Could used and Refilled. It is in Excellent Condition - Displays Beautifully. Imperfection Noted - it has a Very Minor Chip on the Spout Area These Being Quite Common as a Result of Utilitarian Use. It has 2 Surface Glaze Imperfection ( Spots ) - 1 on the Right Side and 1 on the Left Side. These are Also Quite Common and Would Have Occurred in the Making - Kiln Firing Process. These Types of Stoneware Items were Fired in Very Large Kilns with Multiple Pieces so These and Many Other Types of Kiln Flaws are Also Quite Common
