Traveling Man Treasures is selling this antique Grand Tour cast-spelter bust of the mythological Greek/Spartan hero, King Menelaus. The bust depicts the bearded Spartan king looking upward in distress, wearing a highly decorative helmet carved with relief scenes of battling centaurs and mythical beasts. The piece is in good overall condition with moderate wear and other signs of aging as shown.
The bust is modeled after a fragment from the famous Hellenistic marble sculpture group known as Menelaus supporting the body of Patroclus (or the Pasquino Group). During the 19th and early 20th centuries, wealthy European travelers on the "Grand Tour" purchased small-scale patinated bronze reproductions like this one as classical home decor.
