This original 1826 hand-colored fish lithograph comes from Friedrich Strack’s Naturgeschichte in Bildern mit erläuterndem Text, an early German natural-history series published with plates produced by the lithographic establishment Arnz & Co. The composition features two dramatically profiled fish rendered with crisp linework, finely patterned scales, and restrained flashes of red, blue, and ochre. Its spare arrangement and graphic silhouettes give the work an unexpectedly modern presence despite its early nineteenth-century origin.
Scientific detail, historical typography, and subtle period color make the print especially well suited to a library, coastal study, cabinet-of-curiosities wall, or characterful gallery arrangement incorporating antique maps and other marine works.
The original antique sheet is presented in a custom 11 × 14-inch archival double mat, pairing a muted green-brown outer mat with a soft gray inner reveal. Archival materials and reversible techniques have been used throughout. Gentle age toning and an uneven former binding edge remain consistent with the print’s history and do not interfere with the image. Offered unframed, this is an original hand-colored lithograph, not a modern reproduction.

The image remains crisp and well defined, with strong hand coloring and clear printed detail. The sheet shows gentle age toning, light scattered spotting, and minor handling wear consistent with its age. The uneven former binding edge and light margin wear are signals of authenticity and are completely concealed beneath the custom 11 x 14-inch archival mat - they do not affect the image. less
