An exceptional large 19th-century French bronze sculpture by Auguste Moreau, signed by the artist and dating to circa 1860. Cast in solid bronze with a rich aged patina and set on an ornate patina bronze base, this impressive figurative sculpture is a refined example of French decorative art from the mid-19th century.
The composition shows the elegance, movement, and expressive detail associated with Auguste Moreau and the celebrated Moreau family of sculptors. The modeling is beautifully executed, with fluid forms, delicate surface texture, and a strong sense of grace and emotion. The gilt bronze base adds warmth, contrast, and architectural presence, making the piece a commanding focal point for a salon, library, entry hall, gallery, or collector’s interior.
Auguste Moreau was born in Dijon in 1834 and became part of one of France’s most important sculptural families. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1861 through 1913. His works are admired for their realism, poetic charm, and finely detailed craftsmanship.
Please note: This listing is for the bronze sculpture only. The display pedestal shown in the photos is not included in the sale.
