This original 1864 chromolithograph from Leopold Joseph Fitzinger’s ornithological atlas depicts a vivid gathering of birds of paradise, including a king bird-of-paradise pair beneath a crested specimen. Saturated emerald, russet, gold, and blue plumage gives the composition striking decorative presence while preserving the precision and delicacy of nineteenth-century natural-history illustration.
The plate was published in Vienna for Fitzinger’s Bilder-Atlas zur wissenschaftlich-populären Naturgeschichte der Vögel, produced by the Imperial-Royal Court and State Printing Office. The ambitious atlas reflects the period when chromolithography allowed publishers to reproduce increasingly complex color and plumage for scientific study, private libraries, and natural-history collections.
The antique sheet is presented in a warm walnut-tone wood frame with custom double matting in a muted green-brown outer mat and pale warm-neutral inner mat. The restrained palette complements the birds’ earthy coloring while keeping the original paper luminous. The plate retains its original protective tissue guard, preserved behind the sheet, and is sold framed and ready to hang.

The paper remains remarkably bright and clean, with no visible foxing, and the chromolithographed color is strong, crisp, and beautifully preserved. The sheet retains its original protective tissue guard folded behind the plate, an uncommon surviving feature that further speaks to its careful preservation. Any minor handling evidence is consistent with age and does not detract from the image. The walnut-tone frame, matting, and glazing are also in excellent presentational condition. less
