A remarkable antique Chinese dressing and jewelry box, likely dating to the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period.
Constructed entirely of wood, the rectangular chest features a richly aged dark finish accented by traditional brass hardware, decorative corner mounts, carrying handles, and fittings. The front is centered by a beautifully hand-painted bird-and-flower scene depicting a colorful bird perched among flowering branches and lush foliage.
The box opens to reveal a hidden fitted interior designed for the storage of jewelry, cosmetics, keepsakes, and personal objects. A hinged upper section conceals an antique mirror, while the front opens to reveal multiple drawers and storage compartments, including a fitted divided tray for smaller pieces of jewelry.
Chinese calligraphy appears on the interior of one panel, while a small red seal or mark is visible on the exterior. These intriguing details contribute to the history and character of the piece, although the inscription and mark have not been formally attributed.
The beautifully aged surface is one of the most compelling features of the box. The dark wood retains a wonderfully timeworn patina, complemented by aged brass fittings and an original mirror exhibiting atmospheric foxing and oxidation. Together, these elements give the piece the layered, collected character particularly sought after in antique Chinese decorative objects.
Both functional and highly decorative, the box would be striking displayed atop a chest of drawers, dressing table, writing desk, console, or library table. Its sculptural form, hand-painted decoration, hidden storage, and beautifully aged materials make it especially appealing for interiors that embrace chinoiserie, traditional design, maximalism, and collected global antiques.
A distinctive antique Chinese dressing box combining beautiful craftsmanship, practical storage, and exceptional decorative presence.
