moreA fine antique example of the traditional African sculpture known as Benin Bronze. The expression, style and high craftsmanship of the figure are all hallmarks of the artisans of the Bini tribe. The Benin Empire dates back at least six hundred years and lasted until it was overrun and plundered by the British in what is now Nigeria. Traditionally, these pieces were produced for the royal court of the empire, ruled by the Oba (King), and were used to decorate his palace and to pay homage to his divine and mystical powers.
The guinea hen shown here dates to the very late 19th or early 20th century. It is quite large for this type of piece weighing about 9 lbs., with extensive, complex detailing along the back and sides and a high character to the piece, all evidence of the high craftsmanship involved. It has a rich deep brown patina with only minor oxidation and virtually no wear or loss.
