Along with contemporaries like Francisco Zuñíga, Manuel de la Cruz, and Luis Chacón, Amighetti abandoned his classical European training in favor of more revolutionary forms of art, including surrealism and abstract expressionism.
By the 1950s, Amighetti had won international acclaim and spent a great deal of time traveling around the world as he staged exhibitions of his art in major cities in Europe, Asia, and North America. Moreover, he is reported to have made the most highly-priced piece of art in the history of Costa Rica. Amighetti is considered one of the pillars of Costa Rican culture. He was also one of the most prolific and original Latin American artists and continued working all his life. He was a specialist in the art of color xylograph. Amighetti’s art spans a variety of themes, including sexuality, death, and social commentary. His work is both intensely personal while still relevant to an international audience. He obtained several awards, such as the exhibition of plastic arts sponsored by the Journal of Costa Rica in 1936. Likewise, we can mention a fellowship at the National Academy of Fine Arts of the Republic of Argentina. In 1970, he was awarded the Mango prize for his work in favor of the Costa Rican culture. In 1973, he won the first engraving prize at the second annual plastic art exhibition, San José. In the same way, he was awarded the national book prize Aquileo J. Echeverría. In 1990, at the same time, an honorary doctorate from the University of Costa Rica in 1993, and the Teodorico Quiroz prize, of the Costa Rican Art Museum in 1998. See less
